US City Paycheck Calculators

By Barron Hansen, Founder ยท Updated April 20, 2026

City-level taxes are where US paycheck math gets interesting. Most US cities do not levy a personal income tax, so a Houston paycheck and an Austin paycheck look identical to a Dallas paycheck on the local line. A small set of cities, mostly concentrated in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, New York, and a handful of others, do impose a local income or wage tax that shows up on the pay stub. This directory covers the cities our calculator engine models, with a dedicated page per city. Each city page shows the local tax structure, a side-by-side take-home comparison with the parent state and a no-tax baseline, and a calculator pre-set to that city.

How much city tax adds on top of state

The cities below show how much the local layer changes take-home on the same gross salary. Each figure assumes a single filer earning $85,000 in 2026, with no 401(k) or HSA contributions and the federal standard deduction applied. The state-only column is the same salary in the parent state with no city tax applied.

CityCity + StateState OnlyDelta
New York City$60,300$63,500-$3,200 vs state
Philadelphia$62,800$66,000-$3,200 vs state
Detroit$63,000$65,000-$2,000 vs state
Louisville$63,300$65,200-$1,900 vs state
Portland, Oregon$62,000$62,000Same as state

Some local taxes (notably Portland Metro and Multnomah PFA in Oregon) apply only above income thresholds. At $85,000 single, those thresholds may not be reached; the city page explains when they kick in.
